Italian mathematics have never been so strong, it's a golden moment

It is the golden moment of Italian mathematicians , between international recognitions and an ever-increasing number of female students who choose the science of numbers: an ideal scenario in our country on the occasion of the International Day of Women in Mathematics, which since 2018 has been celebrated every 12th May , on the occasion of the birthday of the Iranian mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani , the first woman to obtain the Fields Medal, the most prestigious international recognition in this discipline. "At the moment in Italy there is great enthusiasm , we have great mathematicians", Elisabetta Strickland, a mathematician at the University of Rome Tor Vergata and one of the coordinators of the Day of Women in Mathematics in Italy, told ANSA, where theatrical readings, photographic exhibitions, lessons and educational workshops are planned aimed at highlighting the talent of women in a sector long considered male. The skills of Italian female mathematicians are recognized internationally, as indicated by the two out of ten prizes awarded at the last European Mathematics Congress to Maria Colombo and Cristiana De Filippis, as well as the success of the Italian team at the last Mathematics Olympiad . "We have never been so strong , we have excellent female mathematicians and an ever-increasing presence of female students , there is a new and substantial interest in mathematics ," added Strickland. "Women's Mathematics Day is celebrated on May 12 to commemorate the memory of a great Iranian mathematician, Maryam Mirzakhani, who sadly passed away young, and since then over a hundred events have been organized around the world, which have increased year after year," continued the researcher. "The goal is to inspire women around the world to celebrate their successes in mathematics and to promote an open, welcoming and inclusive work environment for all," writes the International Association for Women in Mathematics (AWN) on its website. At least ten of them are planned in Italy, distributed over the course of a month, around the official date of May 12, ranging from Verona to Salerno. The calendar opens on May 5 in Milan , in an event organized by the association Maddmaths! in collaboration with the universities of Bicocca, Bocconi, Politecnico and Statale. Among the initiatives scheduled, the performance 'Racconta una matematica' and some readings from the theater workshop 'Donne in Matematica' curated by Maria Eugenia D'Aquino. Events are also planned in Rome , at Sapienza University, in L'Aquila with four mathematicians who will share their personal and professional experiences in an open discussion table, between stories, questions and debate. In Cagliari , a seminar, a theater show and the exhibition 'Women of Mathematics from around the World' are scheduled. The University of Rome Tor Vergata will close on June 6 with the participation of Elena Giorgi of Columbia University with a lesson on the mathematics of black holes. The full program is getting richer day by day and all updates will be posted on the Maddmaths! website.
