From Paintings to Sculptures, in Sutri 'Poetry, Power, Irony' by Julio Larraz

The exhibition can be visited at the Palazzo Doebbing museum until October 5th
Paintings, sculptures and works on paper that represent the central themes of the poetics of Julio Larraz, one of the most authoritative contemporary Latin American artists: identity, power, memory and irony. Larraz's works are at the center of the personal exhibition 'Poetry, Power, Irony', set up at the Palazzo Doebbing museum in Sutri, in the province of Viterbo, which can be visited until October 5. The exhibition - curated by Leonardo Contini and the result of the collaboration between the Municipality of Sutri and the Contini Art Gallery - is part of the program of valorization of contemporary art promoted by the museum.
Born in Havana in 1944, Larraz left Cuba in 1961, distancing himself from a regime that limited individual freedom. After his debut in New York as a political caricaturist for newspapers such as the New York Times and the Washington Post, he embarked on an independent and recognizable pictorial path, in which visual narration is combined with a refined use of light, color and composition. His art mixes elements of Caribbean culture, European influences and cinematographic references. His works, constructed as real theatrical scenes, are inhabited by enigmatic figures, environments suspended between dream and reality and visual recurrences that evoke the language of cinema. The result is an imaginative but profoundly aware universe, in which irony becomes both a critical and poetic tool. A central theme of his production is power, which Larraz addresses with a sharp and irreverent gaze, unmasking its contradictions and ridiculing its excesses. His style, at once sophisticated and accessible, alternates grotesque and introspection, denunciation and lightness.
Deeply tied to Italy and in particular to Pietrasanta, where he created many of his sculptures, Larraz has exhibited in important Italian venues such as the Complesso del Vittoriano in Rome, the Fondazione Puglisi Cosentino in Catania and the Galleria Contini, consolidating a strong relationship with the country's cultural panorama. 'Poetry, Power, Irony' will accompany the public through the historic rooms of Palazzo Doebbing, offering an immersive experience in the artist's universe, where each work is an invitation to reflect, smile and imagine.
