Charente: Double massif fire stopped after burning 230 hectares

A fire broke out late Monday afternoon, August 11, in the Double massif, in the south of Charente, burning 230 hectares of vegetation. The fire was contained during the night and "did not progress." Firefighters are now proceeding to flood hot spots, according to La Charente Libre , which cites the departmental fire and rescue service.
More than 200 firefighters were mobilized, supported by Dash and Canadair water bombers . Several homes were evacuated as a precaution in the hamlets of Brossac and Saint-Vallier.
Enedis has implemented precautionary power outages, affecting approximately 700 people in 12 municipalities. SNCF has suspended service on the high-speed line, diverting trains to the conventional line.
Charente remains on orange alert for the risk of forest fires and on red alert for heatwaves by Météo France.
In September 2022, two fires ravaged 400 hectares of pine and hardwood trees in the south of the department, the largest fire ever recorded in Charente.
This fire comes as another giant blaze in the Aude region swept through 16,000 hectares before being brought under control on Sunday. Around a thousand firefighters remain on duty to prevent any recurrence.
