Mental health: one third of young people show signs of anxiety or depressive disorders

Survey after survey, warnings about the unhappiness of young people are multiplying. The resonance is all the stronger given that mental health has been made a major national cause in 2025. The one made public on Friday, October 10, stands out for the number of participants: 17,000 young people aged 11 to 24—middle school, high school, and university students—took part in the Mentalo study coordinated by the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm) and Paris Cité University. It also stands out for its method: these young volunteers were invited to answer a questionnaire not once but seven times over twelve months, via a dedicated application.
"The objective is to assess who among young people is doing badly and why, but also to identify, through longitudinal monitoring, the determinants of mental health, in other words, the factors of vulnerability or, on the contrary, of resilience," explains Professor Karine Chevreul, who heads the Eceve research unit (evaluation and research in health services and policies for vulnerable populations) under the joint supervision of the University of Paris Cité and Inserm.
