The Ministry of Transport awards €30 million for communications technology for the AVE (High Speed Train) line to Murcia.

The Ministry of Transport awards €30 million for communications technology for the AVE (High Speed Train) line to Murcia.

The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has awarded a contract for €30.5 million (VAT included) to deploy the GSM-R mobile communications system along the entire Murcia-Almería High-Speed Line (HSL), including the Pulpí-Águilas branch, marking a further step forward in the development of this new 200-kilometer infrastructure.

The project, to be developed by Adif AV, will equip the new line with the latest technology in railway communications: GSM-R (Global System for Mobile Communications Railways), a radio transmission system with exclusive railway frequencies , ensuring interoperability between European railway networks.

This system enables mobile communications for line operations and the functioning of the signaling and safety system to be installed, ERTMS Level 2, also the most advanced and already contracted.

GSM-R enables data transmission between ERTMS equipment installed on tracks and onboard trains, according to Ministry sources in a statement.

With this award, the Ministry continues to advance work in various areas and phases of the future line, after recently putting out to tender the work to begin laying the tracks on the first section of the line, the Murcia-Lorca section, and while it advances projects for the second.

In parallel, it is tackling the initial electrification works and working to complete the line's platform: it has already completed seven of the 17 sub-sections into which its construction has been structured and is moving forward to complete the rest, all of which are already underway, with the exception of the Pulpí-Águilas connection, for which the draft project is being finalized.

The Ministry of Transport, through Adif, continues to promote the development of the Murcia-Almería High-Speed Line, a strategic axis of the Mediterranean Corridor .

The new line, in addition to serving as a connecting link and gateway to the south of this corridor, will integrate Almería into the high-speed network through the Levante corridor, and into European networks, promoting regional integration and cohesion.

This action contributes to SDGs 9 (promoting reliable, sustainable, and quality infrastructure), 7 (sustainability and energy efficiency), and 8 (economic growth and job creation).

This action may be co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
