Meta announces it is suspending political advertising on its platforms in the EU.
The digital giant Meta (Facebook, Instagram) announced this Friday that, due to the strict regulation of digital platforms in the EU, it will suspend the distribution of political advertising on its platforms in the bloc.
"This is a difficult decision, one we've taken in response to the EU's new Transparency and Targeting of Political Advertising (TTPA) regulation," the company announced. The measure will take effect in October.
The European Union regulation aims to curb foreign interference in electoral processes on the continent and came into force in April 2024, although most of the provisions will be implemented this fall.
According to the regulations, election advertising on platforms must carry a transparency label and clearly identify key information such as who is advertising, what campaign the ad is about, the price paid, and the targeting techniques used.
