Rescued and missing people
Local authorities declined to provide an exact number of missing people due to the large number of people from outside the region visiting and camping in the area for the Fourth of July festivities.
The National Weather Service said more than 12 inches of rain accumulated in just 12 hours on Friday, raising the Guadalupe River near Hunt to its second-highest level on record, at 32 feet.
Call for collaboration with cleaning tasks
Rice told people who have come to authorities offering to help to go to their "local area" and try to collect "debris in buckets and garbage bags," but to be careful because "very dangerous conditions" remain.
He also planned for the city to receive water from wells over the coming weeks to avoid contamination caused by flood debris, such as gasoline and other chemicals.
Help and solidarity
The tragedy has sparked an outpouring of solidarity. Singer Shakira announced that she will donate part of the proceeds from her recent show in Texas to flood victims.
Authorities will continue to report on rescue efforts at press conferences scheduled for Sunday, while the state maintains alerts in several regions for possible further flooding.
