How to control nervous colitis, reveals IMSS doctor

Cases of nervous colitis are on the rise, at least according to the population, which seems to be suffering from this condition more and more. What causes it and how can it be controlled? A doctor from the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) offers a broader perspective.
Constant and sometimes very strong abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea or both alternately, are manifestations of nervous colitis, a functional digestive disorder characterized by distension and changes in intestinal function. .
To treat this disease, it is important to make lifestyle changes, primarily in diet and better stress control , said Luis Eduardo García Romero, gastroenterologist and endoscopist.
Dietary adjustments, he stressed, include a higher proportion of fiber, increasing consumption of vegetables and citrus fruits, as well as learning to identify foods that harm the patient, such as fats and irritants .
The specialist explained that to improve the digestive process and prevent the possibility of facing a painful irritable bowel syndrome, one should eat a balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables, and grains, in addition to drinking plenty of plain water .
Irritable bowel syndrome is related to the individual's emotional state, as a response of the body to stress and low intake of fiber and water. .
Although the condition is very uncomfortable, García Romero emphasized, it does not damage the intestine or cause an organic complication that could put the patient's life at risk .
The Social Security gastroenterologist added that it should not be forgotten that smoking and high alcohol consumption promote colitis, since they irritate the entire gastric-intestinal tract .
