In May 2025, Quantum Systems became Germany's first Unicorn of 2025. The Bavarian drone startup raised €160 million in a Series C financing round. "This brings our total funding volume to €310 million and officially makes us a unicorn," the company wrote in a LinkedIn post at the time.

The financing round was led by venture capital firm Balderton and the Bavarian defense supplier Hensoldt. Other investors include Airbus Defence and Space , Bullhound Capital, the Swiss VC firm LP&E AG, and existing backers such as HV Capital, Project A, Palantir co-founder Peter Thiel, DTCP, Omnes Capital, Airbus Ventures, Porsche, and Notion.

According to Handelsblatt , the startup may be facing another capital increase from existing investors just months after completing its Series C financing round. London-based venture capital firm Balderton has reportedly expressed interest.

Three people familiar with the negotiations are said to have told Handelsblatt reported that a new financing round in the mid-three-digit million range is under discussion. This could increase the company's valuation to as much as three billion euros.

In response to a question from Gründerszene, Quantum Systems stated: “We are not currently in any new financing round.”

Quantum Systems is currently benefiting from the upswing in the defense industry. In the first half of 2025 , €946.3 million of investment flowed into European defense startups, almost 30 percent more than in the previous year.

However, a large portion of this went to a single company: German defense tech company Helsing completed a €600 million Series C financing round in June. Furthermore, the Bundeswehr is planning extensive procurements in the field of autonomous systems, with Quantum Systems being considered as a possible contractor.

Quantum Systems develops drones with vertical takeoff and landing capabilities and integrated camera systems that are used in both civilian applications – such as agriculture, infrastructure monitoring, or logistics – and military contexts.

Florian Seibel, Michael Kriegel, Tobias Kloss, and Armin Busse founded the startup in 2015. Since the deployment of its drones in the Ukraine war, Quantum has established itself as a key player among German defense tech startups.

Quantum Systems also has an international presence: The company, headquartered in Gilching near Munich, operates offices in Los Angeles, Australia, Ukraine, Bucharest, and recently also in Spain. Quantum has also acquired its British competitor Nordic Unmanned UK.

The company has ambitious plans for the future: It wants to develop into a “multi-domain company,” explained Co-CEO Sven Kruck in an interview with Handelsblatt.

A significant step in this direction is the strategic cooperation with Airbus: together, a comprehensive ecosystem for aerial reconnaissance is to be created.

The focus is on the Mosaic software platform, which is designed to connect unmanned systems across air, land, and sea. Underwater drones for marine operations are also being planned.
