Mullet skirt: Yes, this skirt will be making a comeback in summer 2025

Mullet skirt: Yes, this skirt will be making a comeback in summer 2025

Mullet skirt: The controversial silhouette appears in a boho look in summer 2025.

When Vogue started discussing the comeback of the mullet skirt, something clicked inside me. A single reference to this style transported me back to a regional New Look circa 2012, where I scraped together my last pennies to buy a royal blue, pleated high-low monstrosity, which I paired with chunky Topshop wedges and an oversized cross necklace that turned my neck green. This was before the era of 24-hour microtrends on TikTok, and yet I knew deep down that this thin, waterfall-hem polyester skirt wasn't a long-term investment. And sure enough, it disappeared from my closet as quickly as it had appeared.

Aside from the traumatic memories of teenage years, the mullet is back. And this time, it's no longer limited to skin-irritating fabrics and panic buying. Instead of jewel-toned synthetics, the controversial silhouette now returns in neutral chiffons, silks, and organzas. There's still a hint of nostalgia for the 2000s , but without the accompanying music of Taio Cruz and a prepubescent girl banging on the dressing room door.

Like the other boho trends sweeping the fashion world this summer, we have Chloé's Chemena Kamali to thank for this one. At her Fall/Winter 2025 show, hemlines fell unevenly and organically, a far cry from the harsh, jagged edges of their fast-fashion mullet predecessors. At Valentino, the Fall/Winter 2025 show featured skirts in an '80s color palette with cascading layers, while Andreas Kronthaler continues the trend, showcasing asymmetric hems in both Vivienne Westwood's Fall/Winter 2025 and Spring/Summer 2025 men's collections. Ann Demeulemeester also deserves a mention: her signature shredded silhouettes are enough to convince me the mullet is cool again.

Charli XCX also wows us with her stage-ready, twerk-worthy mullets, including her cascading Jean-Paul Gaultier Grammy-winning gown. Lila Moss was most recently spotted in Paris wearing a micro-mini version by Saint Laurent. Unlike other 2000s relics that can safely remain in the archives, this trend has managed to evolve into something much more interesting.
