As early as the mid-16th century, the upper class collected rare and curious objects: exotic natural wonders such as coral trees, artistic miniatures, and early scientific instruments were amassed in their homes and courtyards. The rulers were rarely concerned solely with possessions, but rather with the wonderful opportunity to amaze themselves and others, with contemplation, ultimately, pure pleasure.
