Amal Clooney appears in a strapless little black dress at Buckingham Palace

Amal Clooney: During her visit to Buckingham Palace she wears a strapless dress.
In general, most of the "royal fashion rules" you've probably read about somewhere—no bare legs, no nail polish—are myths invented by the tabloids. The same goes for off-the-shoulder dresses, a favorite silhouette of the Duchess of Sussex when she joined the royal family ("Meghan Markle broke royal protocol," read a 2018 headline after the annual Trooping the Colour parade). In fact, there's no rule prohibiting a woman from showing any sliver of cleavage or shoulders in the presence of the King or Queen.
And so, Amal Clooney chose a strapless gown for the King's Trust Awards at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday evening. The human rights lawyer, accompanied by her husband George Clooney, opted for a classic little black dress with bow detailing on the straps and paired it with gold pumps.

Of course, Clooney has long been a fan of off-the-shoulder dresses, recently wearing a similar vintage Dior by John Galliano gown at the Cannes Film Festival. At this month's Tony Awards, she opted for the silhouette again—this time in a white gown (by Tamara Ralph ) embellished with thousands of pearls that could almost pass for a wedding dress.
Clooney has attended a number of royal events in the past, including the 2018 wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, where the lawyer was named best-dressed in her saffron Stella McCartney gown and matching fascinator. At a Prince's Trust dinner the following year, Clooney opted for a white vintage Stéphane Rolland for Jean-Louis Scherrer gown with a matching cape. Given her sartorial track record, it's no surprise that she wowed again last night.
