Mineral water also has flavors. Those who taste closely will discover a surprising variety. A glimpse into the world of a water sommelier reveals how fascinating the seemingly simple can be.

For most people, water is simply water. For André Uhlig, it's a universe. In Dresden, the trained water sommelier leads tastings where even tap water becomes an experience. In fact, there are 828 officially recognized mineral waters in Germany alone, each with its own unique profile. The differences? Noticeable if you pay attention.

Just like food, water also has different flavors : salty, sweet, sour, bitter. It gets particularly exciting when you combine water with food. "If I have a sweet dish and want to drink mineral water with it, I make sure it's complementary, meaning the opposite—sour," explains Uhlig.

Carbonation also plays a role. In apple spritzer, for example, it brings out the fruit flavor better – even with a small amount of juice. A tasting works even without a sommelier: Different mineral waters with varying mineral contents can be easily compared. Those who pay attention to taste and mouthfeel will discover surprising differences.

Although tap water in Germany is consistently of good quality, the market for mineral water is growing – even for imported varieties. A new trend: Austrian canned water – marketed by rock legend Ozzy Osbourne. For Uhlig, water remains a matter of taste. He doesn't define good or bad in terms of taste.
