Planned appendectomy: Should you avoid antibiotics while waiting?
Intravenous administration of antibiotics while awaiting appendectomy appears to have no effect on the risk of perforation in adults. This is the result of the randomized controlled PERFECT-antibiotics trial from Finland. However, postoperative wound infections were slightly more common when antibiotics were not administered.
