TODAY'S TV WITH SARA WALLIS: Dermot O'Leary hosts odd 'silent' game show that will split viewers
Silence Is Golden with Fatiha El-Ghorri, Katherine Ryan, Seann Walsh and Dermot O'Leary

From thrilling new dramas and gritty documentaries through to glossy entertainment shows, reality binge-watches, returning series and all the best soaps, there's always something to keep us glued to the small screen. If you're wondering what to watch tonight, I've handpicked the best of the box, selected from all the traditional networks like BBC and ITV, as well as streamers like Netflix, Prime, Disney+ and Apple TV.

Tonight, Dermot O'Leary goes a bit quiet with an all-new bizarre game show, while the second episode of ITV's Malpractice brings even more drama and Julie makes an emotional video in Corrie.

See below for my top telly picks.

Pick Of The Day... SILENCE IS GOLDEN, U&DAVE, 9pm

Make some noise… or rather, keep quiet… It’s another game show. Yes, TV bosses have managed to concoct yet another bizarre format, hoping to keep us hooked. With Dermot O’Leary at the helm, the show sees a studio audience given £250,000, then tasked with staying completely silent in order to keep the cash. Sounds simple? There’s a catch, of course. There’s a green room of entertainers headed up by Katherine Ryan, Seann Walsh and Fatiha El-Ghorri attempting to bring the prize pot down.

Every single noise any audience member makes loses them all money - whether it's a scream, a gasp, a word, a laugh, or even a cough. With every audience mic’d up, it’s not long before all hell breaks loose and the audience even starts to turn on each other. One poor bloke cracks instantly and gets death stares. “He’ll need security on the way out,” says Katherine. Another is offered an individual cash prize if he’s willing to speak.

Meanwhile, a steady stream of acts arrive on stage, with plans for comedy, shock and surprises to get a laugh. It’s a bit odd - there’s no buzzing atmosphere, just tension, as drag acts shout in people’s faces, comedians tell jokes to silence, threats are made and sniggers are noted down. Some of it is a bit desperate - no one needs to see a naked old lady or a Santa tell bad jokes - but fortunately Dermot, a total pro, makes this just about work. Strangely addictive, this might just be a quiet success.

Best Of The Rest... MALPRACTICE, ITV1, 9pm

It was a heart-stopping opening episode last night, as new mum Rosie had a psychotic breakdown and jumped off a building to her death. Psychiatric Registrar Dr James Ford (Tom Hughes) had seen Rosie earlier and diagnosed that she was safe to go home - now he’s in a whole heap of trouble.

This is the second season of the thriller, written by former psychiatrist Dr Grace Ofori-Attah, who quit her NHS job to become a screenwriter. “I drew on my experience,” says Grace. “I hadn’t anticipated how stressful I’d find being on a set that was similar to hospitals I’ve worked in.”

This season, also starring Selin Hizli as Dr Sophia Hernandez, is set to be even more intense. Last night’s episode left us with big questions - will anyone find out James wasn’t at home the night of the incident? And what secret is Sophia hiding? Tonight, another traumatic incident occurs in the unit, while James clashes with colleagues and there’s startling new evidence.

While most of us live in houses with walls, on terra firma, there’s a whole community who call the UK’s canal network home. This series follows some of the boat-owners who live on the canals, cruising from place to place in their mobile homes. Retired couple Debs and Mick swapped life working on the Underground for a new life cruising on their boat Rosé and Gin. As they travel through Maghull, en-route to Liverpool, they get a reminder of their time on the rails, at the Frank Hornby Heritage Centre.

In Doncaster, the show catches up with newbie boaters Carrie and her mum Della a year on to see if they’re still afloat. And on the Grand Union Canal, 'bougie hippies' Adam and Lauren and their dog Shanti welcome guest Louise to the boat, who is contributing to Adam’s new book about life on the water, while Lauren harvests a crop from their roof garden for lunch. Whatever floats your boat…

EMMERDALE, ITV1, 7.30pm

When Dawn suggests that Billy moves back out, his hopes of revitalising their relationship are shattered. Later, thinking they are alone, Dawn and Joe kiss, not realising that Clemmie has seen the whole thing. When Clemmie refuses to go to school, pretending to be ill, Dawn doesn’t understand the real problem. As Joe tries to placate Clemmie, she becomes very angry. Ross is devastated when Steph calls off their relationship in order to spare his feelings and focus on her own recovery.

EASTENDERS, BBC1, 7.30pm

It’s the day of Lauren and Peter’s engagement party, but Lauren is worried about some potential complications that were brought up at their last midwife check-up. Harry wakes up hungover at The Arches and Billy takes him to Walford East - but things turn sour when Teddy arrives. Vicki and Ross try to job hunt, but Ross is distracted by Joel’s obsession with his phone. Vicki tries to help, but Ross makes it clear he wants no input from her with parenting.

CORONATION STREET, ITV1, 8pm

Julie videos herself on her phone, talking about the importance of love. George plans a romantic evening to show Eileen how much he cares, but Eileen’s furious and reminds him that he was supposed to be taking her and Julie out to the lake. Todd tells Eileen and Julie he’s had a call from Danielle as Theo has gone missing. Rita orders Jenny to stop wallowing in self pity and look to the future while she’s still got her health.
