How Squid Game Filmed the Baby Scenes – Actor Reveals

How Squid Game Filmed the Baby Scenes – Actor Reveals
  • How Squid Game Filmed the Baby Scenes. Not fully CGI – A lifelike robot baby was used for most scenes, with some digital touch-ups.
  • Safety first – Real newborns couldn’t be used due to dangerous stunts and legal restrictions.
  • Symbolism matters – The baby’s survival was central to the show’s commentary on humanity.
  • Mixed reactions – While some fans criticized the CGI, others embraced the emotional impact.

The jaw-dropping finale of Squid Game Season 3 left fans with one burning question: Was that baby real or CGI?

The infant, born during the deadly games, became a pivotal character—but its uncanny appearance sparked debates online. Now, lead actor Lee Jung-jae has confirmed the truth behind the filming process.

Was the Baby Real or CGI?

No, the baby wasn’t real—but it wasn’t fully CGI either. Instead, the production used a high-tech robotic doll designed to mimic a real newborn. Lee Jung-jae explained:

“We actually had a robot built in the shape and weight of an actual newborn baby. It had facial expressions, wiggled like a real infant, and even had realistic weight—which helped my performance.”

Some CGI enhancements were added in post-production, but the physical presence of the robot made the scenes more authentic for the actors.

Why Didn’t They Use a Real Baby?

Two major reasons: safety and legal restrictions.

  1. Dangerous Stunts – The baby was involved in intense scenes, including the Jump Rope bridge and Sky Squid finale—far too risky for a real infant.
  2. Child Labor Laws – South Korea has strict regulations for underage performers, making lengthy filming schedules impossible.

A real baby was only used in the final scene (set six months later) where Detective Jun-ho finds the child.

Fan Reactions to the CGI Baby

Viewers were divided. Some praised the emotional weight of the storyline, while others mocked the “uncanny valley” effect of the CGI.

“That f**king CGI baby is killing me, I can’t take a damn scene seriously.” – Fan on X

Despite criticism, the baby’s role as a symbol of hope resonated with many, reinforcing the show’s themes of sacrifice and humanity.

The Baby’s Role in the Story

The newborn, inheriting her mother’s number (Player 222), becomes the unexpected winner of the games. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk explained:

“The baby represents the future generation. Her survival aligns with the meaning of Squid Game—leaving a better world for those who come next.”

Gi-hun’s ultimate sacrifice to save her cemented the show’s dark yet hopeful message.
