Spotify's statement on Türkiye: We are evaluating the options

Officials from digital music service Spotify stated that they are continuing to seek a solution in cooperation with Turkish authorities regarding the investigation launched by the Competition Authority.
Officials speaking to the British newspaper The Times stated that due to the ongoing situation, possibilities such as "suspension of market activities or complete withdrawal from Türkiye" are also on the table. At the outset of the process, Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism Batuhan Mumcu claimed that some playlists on the platform contained content that violated the religious and cultural values of society, stating that this situation had become a legal matter and that legal proceedings should be initiated. Mumcu also called on the relevant authorities to take action on this matter.
OFFICIAL INVESTIGATION HAS BEGUNFollowing this announcement, the Competition Authority announced the launch of a formal investigation into Spotify. The investigation will examine whether the company hinders the activities of rival companies and discriminates between artists and content creators. It will also thoroughly examine the increased visibility provided to certain artists, discussions about the fairness of royalty distribution, and whether these practices violate the Law on the Protection of Competition. Spotify, in a statement, emphasized its openness to cooperation with the Competition Authority, stating, “We are aware of the investigation. We are actively monitoring the process and working towards a swift and constructive resolution. We are operating in accordance with applicable legal regulations. However, it is not possible to comment further on the scope of the investigation at this stage.”
