Internet speed record in Japan

The world's ever-increasing data demand in areas such as artificial intelligence training, quantum computers, 8K broadcasts, and massive cloud backups is being met with new speed records.
402 TERABITS PER SECONDA study led by Japan's National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) achieved data transfer rates of 402 terabits per second (Tbps) over standard optical fiber cables. This is approximately 4 million times faster than the current US average of 100 Mbps. At this speed, you could download the entire Netflix library in seconds, or stream 12,500 HD movies in a single session.
NEW GENERATION OPTICAL AMPLIFIERS USEDThe researchers achieved this speed over a distance of 50 kilometers over standard commercially available fiber cables. They achieved this by using multi-band wavelength-division multiplexing and next-generation optical amplifiers, demonstrating that existing infrastructure can be used without requiring major investments.
THE RECORD HAS BEEN BROKE BEFOREJapan broke the record by reaching speeds of 319 Tbps in 2023. The new system has doubled this record with new technologies that minimize signal loss. Compared to global averages, Europe's best speeds remain around 1 Gbps, while even the next-generation 6G technology's target falls far short of this speed. This development could revolutionize numerous areas, from virtual reality to big data analytics, and increase the energy efficiency of data centers.
