Akdeniz University will work on the production of medicines and materials used in organ transplants
The center, which is described as the "center of firsts," has performed the world's first cadaver uterus transplant, Türkiye's first face and double arm transplants, as well as kidney, liver, heart and pancreas transplants.
Prof. Dr. Tuncer Karpuzoğlu Organ Transplantation Center, where cadaver or living donor organ transplants are performed for patients of all age groups, gives hope to many patients every year.
Since its establishment, the center has helped thousands of patients waiting for an organ to regain their health. In recent years, in addition to surgeries, the center has also focused on the production of medicines and materials used in organ transplants.
"WE ARE THE CENTER WHERE THE MOST VARIOUS TRANSPLANTS ARE PERFORMED"Prof. Dr. Tuncer Karpuzoğlu Organ Transplantation Center Director Prof. Dr. Ömer Özkan, whose team performed the world's first cadaver uterus transplant and Türkiye's first face and double arm transplants, said that more awareness needs to be created about organ donation.
Özkan, who drew attention to the fact that the center is the place where the most diverse transplants are performed in the world, said, "We do not want a transplant to be performed in the world that is not performed in our country. We are in a very good position both in Türkiye and in Europe."
Özkan noted that they do not only look at the numbers when carrying out transplants, but also strive to do the best.
Özkan, who emphasized that they pay great attention to good patient selection before transplantation, good preparation for surgery and post-operative follow-up, said: "We are also working to ensure that the infrastructure of the drugs and other materials we use for transplant patients after surgeries is local and national in our country. We now have very good laboratories. Importance has also begun to be given to the laboratory and research side in our country. We are also trying to be a pioneer. We have good work. Over the years, we want to become a country that not only buys those drugs and materials but also exports them to the world. We are trying to do not only clinical application but also the background."
"THERE IS A HIGH DEMAND FOR UTERUS TRANSPLANTATION"Özkan stated that there are as many patients waiting for a uterus transplant as there are for a kidney transplant.
Özkan, who drew attention to the fact that hundreds of patients were waiting for uterus transplantation, said, "We are the country that started this transplant in the world. The infrastructure regarding the legislation needs to be established. In the near future, these surgeries will become routine like kidney, liver or heart transplants."
Özkan stated that their work at the center continues uninterruptedly and that they will continue to work within this scope.
