Adenovirus is also transmitted in swimming pools!
Adenovirus has particularly intensified its impact on children recently. Specialist Dr. Mustafa Alper Aykanat from the Pediatrics Clinic stated that many children are receiving treatment for this disease. He explained that the virus, which is transmitted through contact, droplets, and respiratory routes, can also be transmitted in public swimming pools. He also noted that adenovirus, which infects the eye, is particularly dangerous.
"IT CAN CAUSE SERIOUS DAMAGE IF IT CONTAINS EYES"Pointing out that the virus can also be transmitted through public swimming pools, Specialist Dr. Aykanat said, "Adenovirus is a virus that affects the respiratory tract, eyes, and intestinal system, including the liver. It's usually very mild. It's a serious microbe that can cause serious damage, especially when it gets into the eyes. It's even impossible to perform an eye exam on an infected patient without first sterilizing the equipment used to examine them. It can also cause infections such as laryngitis, lung infections, pneumonia, and bronchitis. Transmitted through droplets, inhalation, and contact, adenovirus can be seen in children of all ages. It's a virus that can cause serious complications, especially in those under the age of one. Furthermore, if it's not properly cleaned, it can be transmitted through swimming pools. Our biggest challenge during this period is the use of communal cooling areas during hot weather. The most frequently asked question during this period is about swimming pool use. If the pool is private and very clean, you can swim; otherwise, I recommend the sea. Unhygienic pools in crowded environments are a serious risk factor for adenovirus infections such as urinary tract infections, especially in girls."
Specialist Dr. Aykanat emphasized the need for rapid medical intervention, particularly for eye infections. He said, "The virus generally presents with symptoms such as sore throat, cough, red eyes, discharge, diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal distension. For eye infections, applying tea bags or using eye drops as recommended may be helpful, but consulting a specialist is essential. The eye is an organ that should not be ignored. Therefore, it's crucial not to waste time when adenovirus is suspected. Swabs and blood tests can be used before detecting this virus. Treatment begins once the diagnosis is made. Following the illness, it's important to drink plenty of fluids, rest, and maintain an open airway. In very severe cases, such as advanced pneumonia, hospitalization and, if necessary, intravenous fluid therapy may be necessary."
"THE VIRUS IS TRANSMITTING VERY FAST"Aykanat, who also made explanations about what to do and what to pay attention to, said: "During this period, hands should be washed thoroughly for at least 30 seconds. Nails should be kept clean. We should stay away from people who are suspected of having adenovirus. We will avoid face-to-face contact, touching, sharing objects, and exchanging fluids. Even parents should kiss their children if they are not sick themselves, but they should not kiss them if they are sick because children can contract the virus very quickly from saliva and fluids. It is also very important to frequently ventilate environments where people are coughing and to clean surfaces. Since the incubation period of adenovirus is one week to 10 days, those who do not show symptoms may also spread the virus. Therefore, one-on-one contact should be avoided as much as possible. Instead of regretting after a child is infected, it is important to pay attention to the necessary precautions."
