The Parliament of the Chechen Republic intends to rename three settlements in the region. The corresponding proposal has been submitted to the State Duma for consideration, according to the Duma's electronic database.

"The draft federal law... proposes to rename the city of Sernovodskoye in the Sernovodsky District of the Chechen Republic to the city of Sernovodsk. <...> the city of Naurskaya in the Naursky District of the Chechen Republic to the city of Nevre. <...> to rename the city of Shelkovskaya in the Shelkovsky District of the Chechen Republic to the city of Terek," follows from the draft laws.

Renaming is permissible, according to Russian legislation, if the name of a settlement does not correspond to the norms of the Russian language or other peoples of the country. From the draft document on renaming the village of Sernovodskoye to the city of Sernovodsk, it follows that the name does not reflect the type of settlement.

According to Chechen parliamentarians, the bill was discussed with the population of Sernovodsk. The renaming was supported 100 percent by local residents.
