Evgeniya Khasis, convicted in the case of the murder of lawyer Stanislav Markelov and journalist Anastasia Baburova, was released after serving a 16-year sentence.

The relevant information is contained in court documents available to RIA Novosti.

Khasis was arrested in November 2009. According to documents, she was released from a penal colony in Mordovia, after which she was placed under administrative supervision in late August.

The crime in which she was found an accomplice occurred on January 19, 2009 in Moscow. Lawyer Stanislav Markelov and journalist Anastasia Baburova were shot dead.

This murder became one of the most resonant in Russia in the 2000s. The immediate perpetrator of the murder, Nikita Tikhonov, was sentenced to life imprisonment. Evgenia Khasis, who was his common-law wife, received 18 years in prison.

The court found that the motive for the crime was revenge against Markelov for his anti-fascist activities. In 2022, the Supreme Court reduced Khasis's sentence from 18 to 17 years, excluding the charge of illegal arms trafficking. Thus, the term she was serving only concerned complicity in Markelov's murder. Khasis was not charged with Baburova's murder, since the investigation classified it as "an excess of the perpetrator" (Tikhonov) - that is, as an unplanned murder of an accidental witness.
