It was just the beginning: Norris beats Piastri and wins in Austria

Two weeks after a Canadian Grand Prix in which the two McLarens cancelled each other out and George Russell took advantage to seal the first victory of the season, the Formula 1 World Championship returned in Austria with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri continuing a very particular duel for the lead in the overall standings.
The Briton started by taking the lead in qualifying, with an authoritative performance that never really put pole position in doubt. Charles Leclerc had the second fastest time and Oscar Piastri was only the third fastest, followed by Lewis Hamilton and George Russell - the big surprise was RB's Liam Lawson, who took sixth place on the grid ahead of Max Verstappen, who started only in seventh.

“I’m very happy, it was a good day and it’s been a good weekend so far. I hope it continues like this. It’s a long season and I’m really enjoying this moment, especially because my hardest moments have been in qualifying. To get this lap, to have this performance over the weekend, it’s been really nice for me. I’m excited. Tomorrow’s race is very long and I’m happy with today, but I want to prove to myself that I can do it again and again. I hope this is just the beginning,” said Lando Norris after taking his first pole position since Monaco at the end of May.
Now, this Sunday and at the Red Bull Ring, the incidents started even before the start: Carlos Sainz was unable to go out for the formation lap and, already in the pits , the Williams ended up catching fire, with the Spanish driver being out of action from the start. At the start itself, Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli were involved in an accident and motivated the virtual safety car to be deployed, in addition to also having to retire immediately. At the front, Lando Norris held the lead and was closely followed by Oscar Piastri, who had already overtaken Charles Leclerc.

Lando Norris was the first McLaren to stop, with Oscar Piastri accelerating to try and pull away from his team-mate and the Briton rejoining the track in fourth, also behind Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton. The Australian pitted shortly afterwards, also rejoining behind his team-mate, and the Ferraris took temporary lead of the race before they themselves changed tyres, leaving Norris back in first place.
The idea that Oscar Piastri wanted to get closer to Lando Norris never left the spotlight, with the Briton expressing this concern in several questions he asked the engineers over the radio. Even so, and even with both drivers making their second pit stop to put on a new set of medium tyres, nothing changed: Norris won the Austrian Grand Prix, achieving his third triumph of the season, and Piastri finished second, with Charles Leclerc completing the podium followed by Lewis Hamilton, George Russell and Liam Lawson.
