Carneiro censures Government for "incorrect attitude"

Carneiro censures Government for "incorrect attitude"
  • Socialist Party leadership candidate José Luís Carneiro this morning criticized the fact that the Government's program contains “proposals that were not discussed during the election campaign”, saying that it is an “incorrect attitude” that “deserves censure” from the PS.

“To see that a government program, which has political proposals that were not subject to the scrutiny of the Portuguese people at an election time, seems to me to be an incorrect attitude that deserves our censure”, stated the socialist deputy in statements to journalists.

José Luís Carneiro says that there are essentially “two matters that were not addressed during the electoral campaign”, but that are now included in the Government’s programme, with special attention being given to “labour matters” and the “health issue”, without detailing exactly the measures in question.

The socialist states that these “two matters” will “deserve a studied and well-founded assessment by the PS” and indicates that the party “will always stand by the country and the people’s concerns”. Speaking to journalists, José Luís Carneiro states that he wants the PS to be the “great promoter of change and transformation of people’s quality of life” in Portugal.

  • Chega municipal deputy Bruno Mascarenhas is the party's candidate for the presidency of the Lisbon City Council in the next local elections, it was announced today.

“Chega formally announces municipal deputy Bruno Mascarenhas as the party’s candidate for the presidency of the Lisbon City Council”, reads a statement released today by the party.

In the note, Chega states that Bruno Mascarenhas “has a professional and political career that demonstrates enormous capacity for work, focus on public service and dedication to the public cause”.

According to the party, the presentation of the candidacy will take place “in the next few days” and will be attended by the president of Chega, André Ventura.

  • PAN's sole deputy, Inês de Sousa Real, called for the immediate suspension of the transport of live animals to areas where conflicts are taking place, such as Israel and Lebanon, until security is guaranteed.

In a draft resolution (an initiative without the force of law) that she submitted to the Assembly of the Republic, the sole deputy recommends that the Government “immediately and temporarily suspend all exports of live animals to Israel and Lebanon, until a safe situation is established for workers and animals”.

“Given the worsening conflict in the region of Israel and the expansion of hostilities towards Lebanon”, it is “urgent that all exports of live animals from the European Union to these areas be suspended until safety can be guaranteed”, he argues.

Inês de Sousa Real said that sending cattle and sheep from the European Union “to a war zone is, in this context, an unacceptable practice and puts these animals at extreme risk, both of injury and death due to frequent attacks”.

“The export of refrigerated meat is more environmentally friendly because, despite the greater consumption of fossil fuels in cold rooms, containers and refrigerated vehicles, it is possible to transport a greater quantity of meat, thus reducing the level of carbon emissions per kilo, when compared with the transport of live animals”, argues the deputy and PAN spokesperson.

  • Economist André Sampaio has declared his support for Luís Marques Mendes' presidential candidacy.
