Scooter insurance will be mandatory

Civil liability insurance will become mandatory, as of Friday, for electric scooters, segways and hoverboards , with the PSP responsible for monitoring this new measure.

According to the decree-law that comes into force this Friday, motor vehicles with a maximum speed exceeding 25 kilometers per hour or weighing more than 25 kg and a speed exceeding 14 kilometers per hour are covered by the obligation to have civil liability insurance.

If the vehicle has these characteristics, it is mandatory to have civil liability insurance, “regardless of the characteristics of the vehicle, the terrain on which it is being used or whether it is parked or in motion”, reads the document published in the Official Gazette.

This diploma excludes “wheelchairs intended exclusively for people with physical disabilities”.

The PSP is responsible for monitoring civil liability insurance related to these vehicles and for applying the respective administrative offences.
