Nutritionist explains which type of broccoli is best for your health

Between stem broccoli , traditional in Brazil, and head broccoli, common in the United States , there are differences that go beyond appearance. Nutritionist Fernando Castro explained to Metrópoles that both types are rich in antioxidants , fiber, vitamins C and K, and minerals such as calcium and iron. However, stem broccoli stands out in terms of nutritional value and plant utilization.
Branching broccoli, also called common broccoli, consists of several stems with small flowers. Heading broccoli, or American broccoli, has a single compact head, similar to cauliflower .
According to Castro, the great advantage of branched broccoli is the ability to use the entire plant: flowers, leaves, and stalks. The leaves, often discarded, are excellent sources of vitamin C , calcium, and iron, contributing to a richer diet with less waste.

"Broccoli also has its value, mainly due to the presence of sulforaphane, a bioactive compound with anticancer properties. However, its consumption is usually limited to the floral part, which limits the absorption of nutrients," explains the nutritionist.
Although broccoli offers advantages in terms of versatility and nutrition, Fernando Castro emphasizes that the most important thing is to ensure regular consumption of broccoli, regardless of the type, within a balanced and varied diet .
