Khloé Kardashian has opened up about the decision she made to become the primary caregiver for her ex-boyfriend and children's father, Tristan Thompson.
In one of the episodes of her podcast - 'Khloé in Wonder Land' - broadcast on July 30, the 41-year-old star explained why she decided to help Amari, 18, after the death of Tristan's mother, Andrea Thompson, in January 2023.
"For those who don't know, Tristan has a younger brother, 18, who has a profound disability. Amari has Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome, which is a form of epilepsy," he explained. "He can't walk or talk. He's never been able to talk," he emphasizes.
Kim Kardashian's sister noted that Andrea was Amari's "sole caregiver when the family lived in Canada." When she died, she, Tristan, and the Kardashian/Jenner clan decided to bring Amari to the United States.
However, NBA player Tristan's busy schedule didn't allow him to be with his brother full-time.
"Tristan is in the NBA and is in a different state every day or for a few days, and it's not good for Amari to be flying so often," he said. "Amari has several seizures a day due to his type of epilepsy," he continued.
"That's why Amari stays with me in Los Angeles. I chose to take care of him and be there to support him because it's not good for him to travel," he said.
So, with this decision, Amari became part of Khloé's family.
In the podcast, Khloé also praised the work of the two "sensational" caregivers who look after Amari, ensuring that the young man has the best life possible given his condition.
Amari, a very special uncle to True and Tatum
Khloé also revealed that Amari's presence is very beneficial for her children, True and Tatum.
"I think it's very important for my children, nieces, and nephews to have contact with all kinds of different people in the world," he reflected. "I think it teaches everyone compassion and understanding. It opens their minds to see that Amari is disabled, of course, but that he's also just like us," he said.
"And I love seeing how excited Amari gets when he's around the kids. He can't speak, but if you get to know him well, you can tell he can express himself; you can see the sparkle in his eyes. He's such an incredible young man. I feel so proud and honored to have Amari in my life," she added.
The end of the relationship with Tristan
"People are always asking, 'Why do you do this? If you and Tristan aren't together anymore, why would you help him take care of Amari?'" he reflected.
"When I met Tristan and his family, it was nine, 10 years ago, crazy. When I met them, Andrea (Tristan's mother) and I became great friends," she recalls.
Kardashian reveals that she always helped Andrea take care of Amari. "She asked questions. She asked for the contact information of certain doctors, and I helped her with that. So she was very involved in everything."
"I also know how much Amari meant to Andrea, and she died of a sudden heart attack. Whether I'm in a relationship with Tristan or not, I still have his family, the ones I spent so many years with. My relationship with Andrea had nothing to do with my commitment to Tristan. Amari deserves someone who will be there for him, take care of him, and give him a great life. Amari deserves my love and care, regardless of where Tristan and I are," she adds.
