Jane Birkin's Hermès bag sells for over €7 million at auction

Jane Birkin's Hermès bag sells for over €7 million at auction

The first Birkin bag by Hermès, considered one of the most sought-after luxury accessories in the world and created especially for actress, singer and fashion icon Jane Birkin, was auctioned in Paris for more than 7 million euros.

With fees, the total auction price reaches 8.582 million euros, making it the most expensive accessory ever sold at auction.

The piece was created in 1984 by the designer and CEO of Hermès, Jean-Louis Dumas, especially for the artist, who wore it until 1994, when she auctioned it in support of an NGO fighting AIDS - and replaced it with another identical one.

The quintessential "it bag," which later became a symbol not only of wealth but also of access to the most exclusive fashion, was the star of Sotheby's "Fashion Icons" auction.

The bag features seven unique design elements that differentiate it from all other Birkins produced subsequently.

In addition to the actress's signs of wear, the model features a shoulder strap, clasp, and other gold-plated brass hardware, as well as Jane's initials carved into the leather. Morgane Halimi, Sotheby's global head of handbags and accessories, described the historic sale as "an important milestone" in the history of fashion and luxury.

"It is a stunning demonstration of the power of a legend and her ability to ignite the passion and desire of collectors seeking exceptional pieces with unique provenance," she said in the press release. "The sale of the Original Birkin is also, ultimately, a celebration of the enduring spirit and appeal of her muse, Jane Birkin."
