Italian TV icon Pippo Baudo dies at 89

Presenter Pippo Baudo, a symbol of Italian TV, died this Saturday (16), in a hospital in Rome, at the age of 89.
The death was reported to ANSA by sources from Baudo's family and confirmed by his lawyer and friend, Giorgio Assumma.
Born in Militello in Val di Catania, Sicily, on June 7, 1936, Pippo Baudo won the public's affection with the music programs "Settevoci" (1966-70) and "Canzonissima" (1972-73), both on the public broadcaster Rai, and became famous for hosting 13 editions of the Sanremo Festival (1968, 1984-85, 1987, 1992-96, 2002-03 and 2007-08).
He is also credited with discovering singer Laura Pausini, who rose to stardom at the 1993 Sanremo Festival and has always treated him like a "second father." "There are men who have left an indelible mark on this life and this earth with their talent and genius. One of them became, 32 years ago, the man who changed my life, choosing me, at just 18 years old, from among the new voices of Sanremo. Since that moment, he has never left me," the artist said in a message on social media.
"He became a family member. The grief I'm experiencing today is inexplicable and profound. Thank you, Pippo. I say this as your student, your friend, and your fan," she added.
Throughout his career, Baudo hosted numerous variety shows on Italian television and, between 1989 and 1997, was artistic director of the Teatro Stabile in Catania. Between 1994 and 1996, he was also artistic director of Rai. In 2021, he was awarded the title of Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.
"One of the greatest protagonists in the history of Italian television has left us. His face and voice have accompanied entire generations, bringing emotions, smiles, and unforgettable moments. Thank you for everything," wrote Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on social media.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani described Baudo as a "giant." "He entered every Italian's home and portrayed Italian society from the 1960s to the new millennium on screen. He is an Italian admired and known worldwide for his work," he said.
