Alexandra Leitão calls for a "calm debate" on the burden of tourism

The Socialist Party candidate for Lisbon City Council called this Saturday for a “calm debate” on the burden of tourism on areas such as mobility, following the Glória elevator accident, about which she refused to address “issues of a technical nature”.

Alexandra Leitão was one of the speakers on one of the panels at the Socialist Party's National Municipal Convention, during which she spoke about the emerging issue of housing, but also highlighted the need to reflect on the issue of tourism in Lisbon following the tragedy that killed 16 people in the capital.

For the head of the list candidate for the PS/Livre/BE/PAN coalition for Lisbon City Council, "taking into account the terrible tragedy that occurred in Lisbon" and out of respect for the victims, it is necessary to "restore people's confidence in the city's infrastructure, specifically mobility infrastructure, and find alternative solutions for those elevators that will remain closed."

"I said this initially about this, and now it seems that a solution is being sought, but this calm debate that needs to be had about infrastructure has to do precisely with the burden that infrastructure bears," he explained.

Alexandra Leitão made it clear that she was not saying “that the load is too much or too little.”

"Now, we need to calmly debate and conduct a study of the load on the city of Lisbon on many issues: sanitation, urban hygiene, and also infrastructure, all of them, including mobility," he argued.

Regarding recent news from Expresso that the choice of cable with a plastic rope core may have been the cause of the accident, the socialist declined to "comment on matters of a technical nature" that she is unfamiliar with.

“I can only say this about this: everything needs to be clarified, responsibilities need to be determined in honor, first and foremost, of the memory of the victims and the victims themselves, but you won't hear me say anything more than that,” he emphasized.

For Alexandra Leitão, “it is necessary to clarify, it is necessary to determine responsibilities.”

"The opposition at Lisbon City Council requested a set of documents that had not yet arrived yesterday, all of them.
