It is the oldest seaside fortress in Poland. Now it is experiencing its golden age

The oldest seaside fortress in Poland is experiencing its golden age. It is thanks to it, among other things, that the Tri-City won the Grand Prix in the Sybilla 2024 Competition. Of course, we are talking about the Wisłoujście Fortress, which can be found in Gdańsk. It has undergone a comprehensive revitalization and it is the project related to these activities that has been appreciated.

Tricity has a reason to be proud

This is the highest distinction, the Grand Prix, so the Polish city has something to be proud of. The exceptional significance of the undertaking was appreciated, including its connection with the protection of Poland's cultural heritage. The important award was presented during a gala at the Museum of Folk Culture in Kolbuszowa.

This is the first time that Tricity can boast such a victory, although a year ago the Gdańsk Museum received a distinction for its temporary exhibition "I'd Rather Not Talk About It".

It is known that there are still other stages ahead for the fortress, which was revitalized as part of the winning project. "The Monument of the History of the Republic of Poland awaits further changes," announced Waldemar Ossowski, director of the Gdańsk Museum. "We are glad that our actions have been noticed and appreciated in such a prestigious competition," he added.

Wisłoujście Fortress. An interesting attraction

The attraction in question is the oldest seaside fortress in Poland. Wisłoujście Fortress is primarily a monument of fortification art. Its name is related to the times when the mouth of the Vistula was located directly north of the Fortress. Today, the facility can be found on the Martwa Wisła at Stara Twierdza 1 Gdańsk. Its beginnings are estimated to be in 1482.

In the past, the fortress was used to control the movement of ships leaving and entering the port of Gdańsk, as well as their protection and navigation with the light of the lantern; today it is a tourist attraction and an important historical element.

The revitalization of the fortress to its current stage took 7 years. It included, among others, conservation, research and modernization works within the unique modern sea fortification, recognized as a Monument of the History of the Republic of Poland. Currently, the facility is available for viewing all year round and serves, among others, an educational function. Visitors can enjoy the renovated tower, wreath, rooms of officers' tenement houses and an outdoor path.

It is worth remembering that other awards were given in other categories in the Sybilla 2024 competition. For example, the National Museum in Krakow won the award for the project "4 x modernity" in the "Scientific and research projects" category, while the Wawel Royal Castle was recognized for the new Porcelain Cabinet exhibition in the "New and modernized permanent exhibitions" category.
