Zabrze/ŚUM is creating a modern simulation center for paramedics

The Medical University of Silesia is creating a modern simulation center for paramedics on its campus in Zabrze-Rokitnica. This is a place where students will be able to learn from their own mistakes before they begin working with patients, explained Alicja Grzanka, Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences in Zabrze, on Wednesday.
The simulation center for paramedics will replicate working conditions in the field and in a hospital. The Medical University of Silesia plans to use it to educate students in paramedicine, medicine, dentistry, and postgraduate programs (e.g., combat medicine).
"As doctors and teachers, we are obligated not only to educate students but also to protect patients. The value of a medical simulation center is that students can master the art of performing certain medical procedures before they reach patients. Learning from one's own mistakes is a crucial part of education in medicine and other fields. And a medical simulation center allows students to make mistakes and learn from them," said Professor Grzanka during Wednesday's press conference.
The building at 38 Henryka Jordana Street is to be converted into a simulation center for paramedics. It was built in the early 20th century and ceased use in the late 1980s and early 1990s. It has approximately 3,250 square meters of usable space.
ŚUM Chancellor Dr. Ireneusz Ryskiel indicated that demolition work is underway inside the building, from which several hundred tons of rubble have been removed, as it is necessary, among other things, to replace most of the ceilings.
He announced that the Silesian Medical University has secured approximately PLN 98 million in funding from the European Funds for Silesia for 2021-2027 to establish the center. The estimated cost of the investment is approximately PLN 118 million. It is scheduled for completion in 2029.
Next to the simulation center for paramedics, a new sports hall with a lecture hall for 350 students is planned. Professor Grzanka pointed out that the planned facilities include climbing walls and squash courts.
Dr. Ryszkiel announced that the Silesian Medical University (ŚUM) has secured approximately PLN 96 million in funding from the National Reconstruction Plan (KPO) for the construction of a sports hall with a lecture hall. The estimated cost is approximately PLN 120 million. The KPO funding should be used in the first half of 2026, when the new facility should be operational. The Chancellor admitted that this deadline is difficult to meet, but not impossible. He announced that the site will be handed over to the contractor on Thursday.
The new sports hall will be accessible to both students and local residents. Acting Mayor of Zabrze, Ewa Weber, said that the development of the Medical University of Silesia translates into the development of the entire city.
"I sincerely hope that the people who study here will stay in Zabrze. This is our shared goal: to educate future doctors and paramedics, and ultimately to have good residents who are engaged in the city's life," Weber said.
The Zabrze campus is the oldest part of the Medical University of Silesia. It was there – in the Upper Silesian Bracka Company hospital complex – that the university began its operations after World War II. Currently, it houses the Faculty of Medical Sciences. (PAP)
