The team from the Institute of Computer Science of the Lodz University of Technology, together with partners from other countries, is developing an ESG roadmap - a document that is to help vocational schools and training centers teach issues related to environmental protection, social issues and responsible management.

Researchers from the Lodz University of Technology are working together with partners from Bulgaria, Italy, Cyprus and Austria on the ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) integration roadmap, which is to be one of the key elements of the international project co-financed by the Erasmus+ programme IntegratESG.

"The document is intended to help vocational schools and training centres better incorporate topics related to environmental protection, social issues and responsible management into their curricula," said Dr. Hab. Eng. Aneta Poniszewska-Marańda from the Faculty of Technical Physics, Computer Science and Applied Mathematics, who is the project coordinator at TUL.

The roadmap is based on existing European and international standards, such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and the GreenComp (environmental education) and EntreComp (Entrepreneurship) competence frameworks. This allows it to be used across countries and industries.

As Dr. Poniszewska-Marańda explained, the document is not a set of theoretical principles created at a desk, because the team regularly consults its content with the project's advisory panel, which includes representatives of schools, companies and non-governmental organizations.

Practitioners’ opinions help researchers adapt the ESG roadmap to the real needs of users. Ultimately, it is intended to provide practical tips and tools that will help teachers and professional trainers introduce ESG principles into their daily teaching.

"Even if a given professional course does not directly concern sustainable development topics, the ESG map is intended to show how these issues can be incorporated into the content of classes – so that students acquire knowledge and competences that are important in the modern world of work," noted the project coordinator.

According to experts from the Lodz University of Technology, modern companies increasingly expect employees to have not only technical knowledge, but also skills related to responsible and ethical action. That is why ESG principles are becoming an important part of business strategies - also due to new legal regulations, and it is important for vocational education to prepare young people for work in a world where sustainable development is becoming the norm.
