According to Rzeczpospolita, the Polish education system is undergoing a curriculum transformation , which will be implemented in stages starting in 2026. As the Ministry of National Education notes, the goal of the proposed changes is to adapt education to contemporary challenges and strengthen student empowerment.
Deputy Minister of National Education Katarzyna Lubnauer emphasized that the proposed approach is intended to promote the joy of learning. A significant innovation, however, is the shift from traditional "cramming" to "expected learning outcomes." This will allow students to develop competencies, independent thinking, and practical application of knowledge .
Importantly, the new core curriculum will take effect in September 2026 in preschools and grades 1 and 4 of primary schools . The following year, in September 2027, these changes will take effect in secondary schools.
Changes to key examsThe planned changes don't end there, as the reform provides for administrative relief for principals and local governments. Education superintendents will no longer be required to review school organizational charts, and these charts will be approved solely by the governing body. Furthermore, superintendents will gain new powers, being able to independently create pedagogical supervision tools.
Schools will gain the right to organize optional classes that are not mandatory but are based on a core curriculum and align with students' interests. Grading rules for uniformed services classes will be modified: grades will be awarded for classes preparing for military service or uniformed services.
The eighth-grade exam will be moved to April from May, which will allow for the announcement of results sooner and the completion of secondary school recruitment before the summer holidays.
Latin was dropped as a foreign language from the Matura exam . It was deemed that it did not meet the communicative requirements of modern education.
In total, the bill introduces changes to seven education laws, including the Teachers' Charter and the Education Financing Act. The entire bill is currently undergoing public consultation and inter-ministerial consultations.
