Over 100 Robotic Colon Cancer Surgeries in Lublin. USK No. 4 Leads the Way

University Clinical Hospital No. 4 in Lublin has already performed over 100 colon cancer surgeries using a surgical robot. Thanks to minimally invasive methods, patients recover faster, and the number of complications is very low. The team's experience has made them not only leaders in the country but also provides training for surgeons from abroad.
Robotic surgery arrived at University Hospital No. 4 in September 2022. In May 2024, the first colon cancer surgery was performed using the Cambridge Medical Robotics Versius robot. Since then, over 100 such procedures have been performed.
" After over a hundred surgeries, we can speak of excellent oncological outcomes and a high level of safety. Patients recover faster, have shorter hospital stays, and the risk of complications is minimal, " emphasizes Dr. Witold Zgodziński , MD, PhD, professor at the Medical University of Warsaw, head of the Clinical Department of General Surgery and Nutritional Therapy.
Robotic procedures are performed minimally invasively, through laparoscopic trocars. The average hospital stay is only 3–4 days, and the rate of serious complications does not exceed 4%, which meets the best global standards.
The results confirm its effectiveness: high R0 resection rates and a high number of lymph nodes removed mean a good prognosis for patients.
University Clinical Hospital No. 4 in Lublin is one of a small group of centers in Poland that have two different systems: CMR Versius and Da Vinci Xi. A total of approximately 650 surgeries in various surgical disciplines have been performed using both platforms.
Modern 3D imaging allows for better assessment of anatomy and tumor lesions. Robotics offers a particular advantage in rectal cancer surgery, where full instrument articulation enables precise dissection in the narrow pelvic space.

" The experience of our surgeons allows us not only to perform numerous surgeries at our hospital but also to train doctors from other centers. The manufacturer of the Versius robot asked us to conduct training for surgeons from Prague and Paris, " says Dr. Paweł Polski, MD, from the Clinical Department of General Surgery and Nutritional Therapy.
The next training will take place in Prague from September 18 to October 2.
Robotic colorectal cancer surgery at the University Clinical Hospital No. 4 is performed as part of a comprehensive care program. Patients are cared for not only by surgeons but also by anesthesiologists, oncologists, nurses, and rehabilitation specialists. Modern endoscopy is also a key element of the therapy, enabling intraoperative diagnosis verification and treatment of tumor obstructions.
– By combining the knowledge and experience of our team with modern technology, we offer patients the highest standard of treatment – safe, precise, and effective robotic colon cancer surgery – concludes Prof. Zgodziński.
