"Due to the current situation in the cultural sphere, the Mayor of Szczecin has decided to take over direct supervision of this area," said Łukasz Kolasa, spokesman for the Mayor of Szczecin, on Wednesday.

Until now, cultural affairs were handled by Vice-President Marcin Biskupski.
"This decision was influenced not only by recent events, including issues related to competitions for director positions in the Department of Culture and the Lentz Villa, but also by increasingly vocal voices coming directly from the artistic community. (...) Two open letters from representatives of Szczecin's culture were sent to the city hall. The signatories not only presented specific demands but also appealed for greater personal involvement of the mayor in organizing and promoting culture," the statement reads.
"As mayor, I have never interfered with the independence of artists, the creation of artistic programs, or various cultural activities in our cultural institutions," says Piotr Krzystek. "I am more committed to the idea that as local governments, we are responsible for the conditions and create the infrastructure, and that true culture is created by artists and professionals. And I would like to continue this trend," he adds.
The Mayor of Szczecin will take over supervision of the culture department in the second half of November.
The Szczecin City Hall announced on Thursday (October 23) that Marta Dziomdziora won the competition for the position of director of the Culture Department .
