Carinthia, a paradise on the water

In southern Austria, the Carinthia region offers a wealth of water-based activities, from canoeing and stand-up paddleboarding on rushing rivers and streams to fishing and relaxing on crystal-clear lakes and in thermal springs. There are plenty of options for couples, friends, or family.
The Drau Paddelweg is a 210 km long route along the Drava River, an emerald green ribbon that flows through Austria's southernmost province, passing through romantic landscapes, spectacular mountains, and breathtaking views. It's a perfect canoeing experience, even for beginners and families, thanks to the gentle current and numerous train stations that make getting around easy.
For those seeking special moments as a couple, the Radenthein Tourist Board offers "Time for Two," a relaxing day aboard a rowboat to explore Lake Millstätter See, particularly its pristine southern shore. The trip includes a picnic basket—vegan, vegetarian, or gluten-free upon request—filled with local delicacies to enjoy amidst the tranquil reeds, where time seems to stand still.
Also on Lake Millstätter See, you can witness traditional net fishing with an expert fisherman. The activity takes place in the Hotel Post's reserve, where you can learn about the life of whitefish, pike, and tench. Upon returning to shore, you can enjoy freshly caught fried fish, served directly by the hotel.
The Schütt, at the foot of Mount Dobratsch, is a pristine landscape crossed by the Gail River, which can be navigated on a guided canoe tour, alternating calm stretches with thrilling rapids, amidst imposing rock faces and unspoiled nature. At the end of the hike, the Schütt Alpine hut offers a typical Carinthian snack. The region's many lakes also offer SUP (stand-up paddling), a complete and fun sport to enjoy from early morning until sunset.
Another unique way to discover Carinthian nature is to take a raft trip on Lake Weissensee; here, you'll pass through an area inhabited by bears, lynxes, bearded vultures, and griffon vultures. Zoologist Manuela Siller leads the walk through woods and meadows, explaining the local ecosystem. Upon returning to the water, the raft transforms into a floating restaurant where you can savor dishes featuring freshly caught lake fish and excellent wines.
In Villach, in the Warmbad forest, the Maibachl thermal water flows naturally at 29 degrees Celsius, where a warm bath in the heart of the forest, in a natural pool, is an experience of pure relaxation and connection with nature.
Each Carinthian lake has unique features to discover underwater: Lake Weissensee, with its clear, transparent bottom, resembles an underwater park; Lake Ossiacher See reveals dark areas populated by large fish; Lake Millstätter See surprises with its diverse fish life. Another unique experience is practicing yoga on the lakeshore: on Lake Wörthersee, for example, you can stumble upon spontaneous yoga sessions at any time of day, followed by refreshing dips in the turquoise waters. The lakes also feature "bathhouses," spas overlooking the water with panoramic saunas and infinity pools. Among the best are those on Lake Wörthersee (Werzer Baths), Lake Millstätter See, and Lake Klopeiner. A cruise can also be a great way to discover Carinthia from the water: Lake Millstätter See offers music tours, while Lake Wörthersee hosts Sunday brunches and party cruises during events like the 'Pink Lake Festival', a popular LGBTQ+ event from August 28th to 31st.
Finally, at the Hotel Kollers, on Lake Millstätter See, you can enjoy an exclusive experience: dinner for two on a floating platform. The waiter arrives by speedboat and serves a champagne aperitif and a refined seven-course menu, leaving the couple alone in a dreamlike setting.
