Tomorrow the Laura Bassi ship's summer oceanographic campaign

The Research Vessel Laura Bassi will set sail tomorrow from Trieste for a scientific campaign in Mediterranean, until September 15th for research activities in the Gulf of Trieste, the Aeolian Islands, and the southern Adriatic. Coordinates from the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics - OGS, the mission intends to deepen the studies of areas strategic and experiment with new oceanographic instruments. Most of the activities take place within ITINERIS, PNRR project of which OGS is a partner, to establish the hub Italian access to data, services and facilities for study interdisciplinary of atmosphere, marine domain, biosphere terrestrial and geosphere. In the Gulf of Trieste the ship will carry out sampling geological and geophysical surveys within the SABMAR project: mapping and characterization of the sedimentary bodies of the marine and coastal environment between Monfalcone and Lignano, a project, coordinated for the OGS by Martina Busetti, and financed from the Geological Survey of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region. In the area of the Aeolian Islands (Panarea, Basiluzzo) it will be employed the AUV Hugin, an autonomous underwater vehicle capable of operate up to 3,000 meters deep. Daniela Accettella, campaign head explains that it will be "used to acquire geophysical, geochemical and morphological data of the seabed. Sediment samples and acoustic data will be collected." In Acoustic monitoring will be carried out in the Adriatic and Ionian seas hydrophones to detect sounds emitted by marine mammals, preparatory activity for the next Antarctic mission. After a stop in Milazzo and a partial change of scientific personnel, the second part of the oceanographic campaign will begin in Southern Adriatic. The Laura Bassi will carry out measurements with the autonomous underwater vehicle Ocean Glider and with robots divers of the International Climate Research Program and oceanographic Argo. After a 20-day campaign, the ship will return to Trieste on September 15th where the works will be completed preparations for the next Antarctic Campaign which will depart from Trieste on October 4th.
