EU opens to possibility of postponing implementation of AI Act

"It makes no sense to change the deadlines existing laws. The bans provided by the AI Act in February this year, the legal deadlines for AI models for commercial purposes generals will start in August (2025, ed.), and this cannot be changed. Our legislation and its objectives remain". A spokesperson for the European Commission said regarding the possibility of postponing some provisions of the AI Act, which came into force in August last year. The AI Act will be fully applicable on 2 August 2026, with some exceptions concerning, among other things, the rules on practices prohibited, general-purpose AI models and governance. "During this year - the spokesperson recalled - it is a digital omnibus is planned in which we will check what can be done do with our digital acquis to simplify it and, in this context, I cannot now determine whether this will affect or not on future deadlines for those that will start in August 2026, so it remains to be seen."
