Americans can cut off Europe from the internet at any time

According to the publication, the possibility of Europe being cut off from the internet stems from its “near-total dependence on American cloud providers,” which are the driving force of the internet. Furthermore, just three American giants — Amazon, Microsoft and Google — account for more than two-thirds of the EU market.

At the same time, Europe's share of the global microprocessor market has fallen to 10 percent, meaning the EU is unable to quickly create the necessary services on its own.

As Politico writes: the current situation has led some European commentators to long argue that such a relationship allows American agencies to spy on Europeans' confidential data .

There are now "real concerns" that the United States could use its technological dominance as a weapon to exert influence abroad, Politico writes.

- I don't know (whether Donald Trump will close cloud services in Europe – ed.), but I never expected the US to threaten to take back Greenland. This is madness greater than closing the cloud – commented on the concerns Alexander Windbichler, CEO of Austrian cloud company Anexia.

- The idea that he (Trump – ed.) could order the Internet to be shut down or do something else that would seriously harm the EU's economic interests is no longer as preposterous as it might have seemed six months ago, admits Zach Myers, head of the Center for European Regulation think tank.
