A patient recovers his hearing after surgery at a hospital in Asti.

A woman regained her hearing thanks to a complex surgery performed by the Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery team at Cardinal Massaia Hospital in Asti. The patient had a temporal bone tumor and was previously deaf on the opposite side.

The medical team, led by Roberto Briatore, acting chief physician, assisted by the Anesthesia and Intensive Care Unit, directed by Alessandro Bianchi, and the operating unit's nursing staff, coordinated by Dr. Roberta Sampietro, performed the tumor removal using an advanced microsurgical technique (subtotal petrosectomy). During the same procedure, a bone conduction implant was inserted for the first time in Asti: sound waves will be transmitted through the vibration of the skull.

"The latest-generation prosthesis," explains Briatore, "is currently considered cutting-edge; it allows hearing in the absence of the middle ear structures that were necessarily removed during surgery. We have prevented complete deafness for the patient, who has already begun her rehabilitation program. Surrounded by the love of her loved ones, she will soon be able to resume her normal social life."
