The summit of the world's most famous volcano becomes the stage for Al Di Meola's exclusive performance at the 30th edition of the Pomigliano Jazz festival . The American guitarist, composer, and producer is the star of the sunset concert on the crater of Vesuvius , scheduled for Saturday, July 26, in a duo with guitarist Peo Alfonsi .
The now-classic event on the Gran Cono del Vesuvio—one of the most anticipated events of Campania's summer music season—features a true hero of the six strings this year. A prolific composer whose work spans jazz, world music, fusion, and rock, he has sold over 10 million albums, earned four gold records, two platinum records, and numerous Grammy nominations.
A world-acclaimed musician who has released over 30 albums as a leader and collaborated with major artists in various fields. Among his many collaborations are Chick Corea 's supergroup Return to Forever , the celebrated acoustic guitar trio with John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucia , and the trio Rite of Strings with bassist Stanley Clarke and violinist Jean-Luc Ponty . He has also collaborated with names such as Frank Zappa, Jimmy Page, Stevie Wonder, Luciano Pavarotti, Paul Simon, Phil Collins, Santana, Steve Winwood, and Herbie Hancock, to name just a few.
Born in New Jersey to a family of Italian descent (from Cerreto Sannita), Al Di Meola is undoubtedly one of the most influential guitarists on the contemporary scene. His extraordinary technique, both on acoustic and electric guitar, has earned him regal status among fans of the instrument and beyond.
For this evocative concert on Mount Vesuvius, at an altitude of 1,200 meters, Al Di Meola and Peo Alfonsi will deliver a stunning acoustic set, with a setlist that includes his classics, his latest productions, Latin and Mediterranean sounds, and a few surprises inspired by his love for the city of Naples. This concert will showcase his complex, syncopated rhythms, combined with lyrical melodies and sophisticated harmonies, which have been at the heart of his music for over forty years.
The show on the crater of Vesuvius is a unique experience, and the concert is its central component . For this reason, audiences are asked to observe some fundamental rules to fully experience this emotional experience. The meeting point is at 4:30 pm at the 1,000-meter-high square in Ercolano, where refreshments are available. From the square , small groups will ascend on foot, accompanied by volcanological guides , along a series of extraordinarily scenic hairpin bends that lead to the rim of the crater. Once at the summit, participants will sit on cushions on the ground to enjoy the concert. The musicians will play until sunset . At the end of the concert, participants will return to the square, accompanied by volcanological guides.
