Joseph Capriati's 'Metamorphosis': "From Vinyl to Electronic Music"

As a boy, he admired the vinyl records playing on his grandmother's turntable. Today, Joseph Capriati is one of the most recognizable names on the global techno scene, from the clubs of Naples to the decks of Ibiza, and festivals like Burning Man and Sunwaves. The Campania-born DJ and producer continues his artistic evolution with an ambitious project, Metamorfosi, playing tonight at Cocoricò in Riccione.
Capriati, when did you realize that being a DJ would be your life?
There were two key moments. The first was when I was 11, when I saw a DJ at work for the first time: it was love at first sight. From that day on, I began experimenting with vinyl, even using my grandmother's turntable. The second moment was in 2006, when my tracks began to be played by artists like Richie Hawtin and Carl Cox. I was still unsure; my parents were pushing me toward a more traditional career, so much so that I signed up for military service. But due to a bureaucratic error, I wasn't called up: for me, it was a sign. I decided to dedicate myself fully to music.
How does it feel to play at Cocoricò?
"It's a global icon. I went there for the first time when I was 18, on vacation, and it was an unforgettable experience. Seeing the Pyramid, the atmosphere: it's pure magic. Returning there today with my Metamorfosi project is a great honor."
How does it manage to renew itself without losing its identity?
"Music changes, and so do I. I started out playing house at friends' parties, then became a resident at clubs. Today, my staples are techno and house, but I love to explore. Eclecticism is what keeps me alive. Metamorfosi represents this constant transformation."
What do you do to unwind?
"When I'm not touring, I try to rest, exercise, and dedicate myself to art, architecture, and history. I enjoy exploring the places I travel to."
Is there a collaboration you still dream of?
"I like working alone, unless a real connection is born. One example was the remix of Cesare Cremonini and Elisa's "Viscenza Tutto": Italian pop transformed into my own language. It was inspiring. I'd love to do something similar internationally, when the right opportunity arises."
How do you handle the stress of touring?
"I take care of myself: healthy living, exercise, nutrition, sleep. I've been traveling since I was 18, I'm 38 now, and I feel the need for balance. Music production has become a real therapy. After twenty years, I still feel the fire of my beginnings, but with a new maturity."
What should fans expect tonight?
"A sonic journey through house and techno. I'll be playing a five-hour b2b with Jamie Jones, and we'll be joined on the lineup by some big names from the international scene. It'll be a night full of excitement, surprises, and tons of energy."
