'Encounters from Afar', the exhibition of masterpieces from the Galleria Civica d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea of Turin, opens in China . Over 60 works from the Galleria Civica d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea of Turin (GAM ) will be exhibited for the first time in China at the Chengdu Art Museum from August 8th to November 16th. The exhibition 'Encounters from Afar: Masterpieces from the Galleria Civica d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea of Turin' is an initiative born to mark the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Italy and the People's Republic of China. Conceived and produced by Palatina Cultural Group in collaboration with Villaggio Globale International, the project was conceived with the aim of promoting Italian cultural heritage abroad and realizing a collaborative project between the Fondazione Torino Musei, the Galleria Civica d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea of Turin, and the Chengdu Art Museum.
'Encounters from Afar' aims to present modern Italian and European art from the late 19th to the mid-20th century, beginning with Romanticism and Impressionism and culminating in the 20th-century avant-garde. Curated by Professor Alessandro Botta, the exhibition will take visitors on a fascinating journey through the major transformations of modern painting, guided by paintings and graphic works that represent over 100 years of art history, from Francesco Hayez's Portrait of Carolina Zucchi (c. 1825) to Renato Guttuso's People in the Street (1956–1957). The works from Turin's Galleria Civica d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, one of the largest and most renowned collections in Italy, include the most celebrated and defining works by Italian artists such as Giovanni Boldini, Giacomo Balla, Giorgio de Chirico, and Giorgio Morandi, exhibited alongside European masters such as Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Johannes Itten, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, and many others.
The carefully selected masterpieces will travel to China for the very first time, offering the Chinese public a unique opportunity to experience the GAM's important collection in person and engage with artists of the past, sharing everyday sensations and thoughts from a cultural era that shaped the history of European art. Led by the Sichuan Provincial Cultural Heritage Office and the Chengdu City Department of Culture and Tourism, the initiative is sponsored by the Italian Embassy in Beijing, the Italian Consulate General in Chongqing, the Italian Cultural Institute in Beijing, and the City of Turin.
