Three common packing mistakes to avoid or risk not being able to shut the case

Three common packing mistakes to avoid or risk not being able to shut the case

Travel expert Richard Edwards, Owner of White House Hideaway, revealed the top three most common packing mistakes that many people are guilty of. "People often pack as if they're going away for two weeks when they're only staying for two nights,” explains Edwards.

"The irony is that overpacking actually works against the very relaxation they're seeking from their staycation." One of the first problems holiday-goers encounter is the "just in case" mentality when packing. Stuffing items into their suitcase or weekend bag "just in case" is one of the worst ways to pack.

Adding extra items that are unlikely to be used is just a waste of time, space and effort.

It's also wise to limit yourself to two pairs of shoes when packing for a short-haul holiday.

Edwards says you can decide on which pairs by choosing one comfortable pair for walking and a slightly smarter pair.

This way, by only packing two pairs of shoes, you are creating more space for other items and not adding any unnecessary weight.

Another common mistake is overpacking toiletries – travel-sized products and small containers will do.

"There's real psychology behind why people overpack, and it often stems from anxiety about being unprepared," says Edwards.

"Then guests arrive at our cabins with enormous suitcases for a weekend break, I can see they're already stressed before their relaxation has even begun."

He adds: "The whole point of a staycation is to disconnect and unwind, but when you're lugging heavy bags and rifling through piles of unnecessary clothes, you're carrying that mental clutter with you."

For those who have packed lightly, Edwards has noticed that they're "not spending the first hour of their retreat organising belongings".

Edwards says: "Instead, they're out on the pebble beach or enjoying the hot tub within minutes of arrival."
