BBC Death in Paradise fans urged to binge eight-part period crime drama streaming now

BBC Death in Paradise fans are being told they absolutely must watch a 'captivating' new wartime detective series, available for streaming right now.

The Breslau Murders has just been added to Disney+'s vast catalogue from today (12th September).

This Polish production, comprising eight episodes, is being promoted as the addictive crime drama perfect for keeping genre devotees glued to their screens this weekend.

The action unfolds in Breslau, the former German designation for Wrocław in Poland, during 1936 as the eleventh Olympic Games rapidly approach.

Global attention is focused on the capital of the Third Reich, reports the Mirror.

However, within the city, a vicious killing occurs at a hotel.

Police commissioner Franz Podolsky (portrayed by Tomasz Schuchardt) discovers himself working round the clock to resolve the murder of a sportsman, which could potentially destroy the entire propaganda operation and derail the major sporting spectacle.

The synopsis reveals: "The only one who can close the investigation in time is the police commissioner of Polish origin Podolsky, who despises the Third Reich but feels duty-bound to bring the killer to justice.

"Known for his controversial but effective methods, Podolsky finds himself face to face with the emerging evil. While facing his own demons, he begins a dangerous game of cat and mouse with the murderer, threatening both his career and personal life."

Early reviews suggest that the series is set to deliver a gripping blend of period drama and murder mystery, making it a must-watch for fans of Netflix's Department Q or BBC favourites like Shetland and Murder in Paradise.

The lead character, as seen in the trailer, appears to share some characteristics with detectives from these popular shows. As Good Housekeeping puts it: " The Breslau Murders is the polished period crime drama with an alluring detective."

All eight episodes are available at once, allowing viewers to binge-watch to their heart's content. This marks the streaming giant's first original series produced in central or eastern Europe.

While the series isn't based on a true story, it draws heavily from significant historical events. In the 1930s, the city now known as Wrocław was under German control and referred to as Breslau.

Originally a Polish city, it became Germanised from the 13th century onwards. The '30s saw the rise of the Nazi regime, and after Hitler came to power in 1933, Breslau underwent extreme Nazification.

It became one of the strongest support bases of the Nazi Party in Europe, and Jewish residents were persecuted. Immediately after World War II in 1945, Wrocław became part of Poland again, with its German population expelled and its name reverted to the Polish form.

The city was repopulated with Poles, many from areas annexed by the Soviet Union.

The Breslau Murders is streaming on Disney+.
