Canada's travel advisories updated for several destinations

FRANCE

The federal government is urging people to exercise extreme caution "due to the high terrorist threat." According to the Vigipirate plan, which is a three-tiered plan of measures established to protect the population, France is at the third level.

Crowds can be dangerous, as robberies are common and tourists are targeted.

When leaving the airport, do not just take any taxi, as several illegal taxis target travelers.

Violent crimes are rarer, but can occur.

SPAIN

Travelers to Spain are also advised to exercise caution due to the high terrorist threat.

The advisory was amended on Wednesday to remove warnings about the major power outage that hit the country, in addition to Portugal and parts of France, earlier this week.

It is necessary to be vigilant in large gatherings, where thieves are numerous.

"People posing as undercover police officers may ask to see your passport, identification papers, or wallet," the Canadian government website says.

MEXICO

Travelers to Mexico are also advised to exercise caution due to high crime rates and the risk of kidnapping.

Several regional advisories are in effect, requiring all non-essential travel to be avoided, including Chiapas, Colima, and Lagunas de Zempoala National Park in Morelos.

Armed groups have been fighting each other for the past few weeks between Culiacan, Mazatlán and the surrounding areas.

Since April 22, 2025, the security situation has deteriorated in the state of Baja California Sur due to shootings, arsons, assaults, and robberies.

COSTA RICA

Travelers to Costa Rica are advised to exercise extreme caution due to crime.

Petty crime, including pickpocketing and purse snatching, is common. Tourists, perceived as wealthy, are often targeted for this type of theft.

The advisory has been amended to include home burglaries and car thefts. Burglars sometimes target rental properties, so make sure you're in a secure rental.

Violent crimes occur in Costa Rica, where drug trafficking is common.

Women traveling alone should be more vigilant, as assaults can occur.

CHILE

The federal government is urging people to exercise extreme caution "due to ongoing protests and civil unrest."

Demonstrations, even peaceful ones, can lead to violence.

Information about a tsunami warning in Chile has been removed.

Petty crime can occur, but travelers should be especially vigilant in major cities such as Santiago, Calama, and San Pedro de Atacama.

However, armed robberies have increased in recent years.

ARGENTINA

Argentina is relatively safe, but the Buenos Aires metropolitan area and the Rosario region require extra caution.

An earthquake occurred on May 2 south of Ushuaia, so caution is advised when visiting.

Crowds can be dangerous, as robberies are common and tourists are targeted.

Gang violence is prevalent in vulnerable neighborhoods where there is little police presence.
