Transgender identity: the High Authority for Health is working under pressure to develop its recommendations

But where have the minors gone? On Friday, July 18, the French National Authority for Health (HAS) unveiled the content of the best practice recommendations regarding the transition process for transgender adults. The working group was stunned: some of them had not been informed beforehand of the removal of the section concerning minors aged 16 to 18. "You can't rework a text at the last minute without having it reread. That's no way to do things," said Nicolas Morel-Journel, a urological surgeon at the Hospices Civiles de Lyon and co-chair of the working group. This is the latest twist reflecting the three years of work on the subject, which took place in an unprecedented atmosphere of media pressure and legal wrangling between the HAS and anti-trans associations.
As early as 2022, the composition of the working group that will review the scientific literature to draft a first version of the recommendations is causing a stir. The HAS has asked learned societies and user associations to propose names, which will be reviewed by the ethics officer to verify the absence of conflicts of interest.
