Saïg Picol, 18, from Finistère, died on Friday, organizers of the World Sculling Championship in Groix (Morbihan) announced. The young man succumbed to anaphylactic shock after being stung by a wasp or hornet, according to Ouest-France .
"We've known him for about ten years," says one of the sculling race organizers. "He was about to turn 19, a kid we've seen grow up in the sculling fraternity. He was a champion in the children's divisions and finished third in the championship a week ago in the adult category."
The funeral is scheduled for WednesdaySculling is a rowing technique where the paddle is placed at the back of a boat to propel it forward. Saïg Picol came from a family of champions in this discipline, as his mother and grandmother were both awarded medals, according to Ouest-France .
