Covid-19: A "new epidemic wave" in France?

Five years after the start of the pandemic, Covid-19 may have been forgotten by many, but it's still very much with us. Since 2023, it has no longer been an epidemic: the virus has been circulating quietly ever since, with occasional outbreaks. This appears to have been the case since the end of summer 2025.
First, emergency room visits for suspected Covid-19 infection increased by 43% among those under 15 and by 29% among adults between the first and second weeks of September, according to Public Health France . A 66% increase was also observed among SOS Médecins .
Which regions are most affected by the return of the Covid-19 epidemic? The situation in FranceSeveral regional reports also report an increase in Covid-19 surveillance indicators. This is particularly the case in Normandy. The report published by Santé publique France indicates the "beginning of an epidemic resurgence," even if "the indicators remain weak at this stage" and that there is, for the moment, "no impact on mortality." The agency also specifies that "this increase mainly concerns people under 65 years of age and in particular those under 15, with people aged 65 and over being little affected for the moment."
In the Ile-de-France region, the observation is similar: "the number of emergency room visits and the number of procedures at SOS Médecins for suspected COVID-19 continued to increase" during the second week of September, according to a regional report . The latter also reports an increase in the detection of the virus in wastewater.
While an increase in Covid-19-related indicators has been observed, they remain low and similar to last year, much lower than during the pandemic. Vulnerable people must nevertheless remain vigilant. " There is still time to protect the most vulnerable by implementing barrier measures (including wearing a mask if they show signs) and updating vaccinations," Public Health France reminded.
When will the 2025 Covid-19 vaccination campaign take place?A joint flu and Covid-19 vaccination campaign is planned to begin October 14 in France. The vaccine is recommended for vulnerable people, including those over 65, people with chronic illnesses, and pregnant women. Healthcare professionals and those close to vulnerable people are also targeted by the campaign. The vaccine is fully covered for all these people.
What are the symptoms of Covid-19?The symptoms of Covid-19 are always the same: they generally include headaches and sore throats, body aches, or a fever. If you experience symptoms, you can get tested, either with a self-test at a pharmacy or with a prescription PCR test.
